Steven is a founding Partner and Chief Investment Officer. He began his career in the investment industry in 1995. Prior to founding AlphaNorth in 2007, from July 1998 to August 2007 he was employed at one of the world's largest financial institutions as Vice President - Canadian Equities where he managed the Canadian equity assets of approximately $350 million. Steven managed a pooled fund which focussed on Canadian small capitalization companies from its inception to August 2007 achieving returns that were ranked #1 in performance by a major fund ranking service in their small cap pooled fund category (35.8% over 9 years as compared to 10.0% for S&P/TSX Composite Index and 13.0% for the BMO Weighted Small Cap Total Return Index) over the same period. He also managed a large cap fund which ranked in the first quartile of performance among other Canadian equity pooled funds for the following time periods: 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 4 year, 5 year and 10 year.
Prior to this, from September 1997 to July 1998 Steven was employed as a Portfolio Manager at a high net worth investment boutique. Mr. Palmer started his career in January 1995 as a Research Associate and progressed to Research Analyst. Steven earned a BA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Joey is a founding Partner and Head Trader. He began his career in the investment industry in 1995 performing a variety of roles in systems and operations. In 1997 he became the Head Trader responsible for all equities and money market trading as well as back-up for the fixed income portfolio manager at one of the world's largest financial institutions. Joey was later awarded the additional responsibilities of Assistant Portfolio Manager. Joey's background allows him to effectively manage the operations and accounting functions at AlphaNorth. Joey is very connected among the trader community being a member of the Institutional Equity Traders Association. Joey earned a BA in Economics from the York University.
Ken is the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Compliance. Ken is a Chartered Accountant and Certified Public Accountant. Ken joined AlphaNorth in July 2011. Prior to joining AlphaNorth, Ken worked for 3 years at a global fund administration company with over $20 billion in assets under administration. During this time, he specialized in and was responsible for the Canadian hedge fund aspect of the business. By virtue of his role, he was responsible for the compliance, investor services, accounting and operations functions for these funds. Before this, Ken spent almost 4 years at Deloitte and Touche LLP accounting firm, leading compliance and financial audit engagements for technology, media and resource companies. Ken began his career in the corporate finance sector of a leading US based asset-based financing firm in 1998 where he held progressive roles including VP for the Canadian operations.
Skye joined AlphaNorth in 2010 as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Prior to joining AlphaNorth, Skye worked for over three years on the retail investment side with a leading global independent investment dealer. Skye earned a BFA from Ryerson University and has also completed her Canadian Securities Course (CSC), Conduct and Practices Handbook Course (CPH) and 90-day Investment Advisor Training Program. Skye has worked as a television and media personality for a number of entertainment television networks as well as hosting marketing and PR events. Most recently, Skye has been seen on BNN and CTV for her work in Stock & Awe, an educational series for investors. Skye has successfully blended two fascinating careers and two passions into one exciting and dynamic role at AlphaNorth.
Jennifer MacKenzie is a graduate of the University of Manitoba Law School and, following her call to the Bar of Ontario, she worked in the field of human resources. Jennifer has more than 10 years experience practising employment law with a focus on assisting both employers and employees on a range of employment related issues including terminations, employment contracts, harassment and human rights issues.
Scarlett is a graduate of McGill University (B.A.) and joined AlphaNorth in 2010 after working in the investor relations department of a global financial services company. Prior to graduation, she worked with Sotheby's Toronto where she supported senior staff and assisted high net worth clients. She has completed her Canadian Securities Course (CSC) and is currently enrolled in the CFA program.
Tina joined AlphaNorth in 2011 as a Research Analyst, focusing primarily on the metals and mining sector. Prior to this position, she worked in the same capacity for a reputable hedge fund. She is a graduate from the University of Western Ontario (BMOS). Tina has completed Level I of the CFA program and intends to pursue the CFA designation.
